Loss of Humanly Interacting

Let's see if I remember how to do this thing again...

...

Hundreds of folk,
Clicking on phones, blackberries, ipads, laptops,
Desperately trying to connect, to reach out, be touched, interact with
On virtual social networking sites,
With coded friends and facades of mates,
All to escape the 'real' loneliness and impersonal big city life,
While all desperately trying to ignore the hundreds of humans pressed up against them on trains.

Ah, you two are too kind!
If you thought, and if this keeps you thinking, then my job here is done!

i've often pondered that too. but when was the last time you talked to a random stranger on the tram?

You got me thinking... and I reckon that I talk to a stranger on public transport about every fortnight to once a month. And I love these encounters, even if they have me wondering what the "ulterior motives" are. I am trying my best these days to start putting my phone away & to just "be in the moment", lose myself in watching & thinking. It used to be such a fun past time. Damn facebook! It will be my imagination's undoing!

I was also going to add... during my trip back to South Africa now, I used public transport twice, and both times I was instantly in a conversation with a stranger. By the end of the 20 minutes, I knew about that person's life. And both people were very different from me & from very different cultures to me. And this isn't unusual, one just ends up talking to the person sitting/ standing next to you, cause you two are in close proximity. I miss that. Daily interactions & conversations with strangers. Just asking how they are, how their day is. Chat chat about nothing but have a human encounter.
